The Suspended Step of the Stork (1991) DVD9 / PAL

Synopsis :
While working on a story in the border area, a young journalist discovers a divided town bisected by a river which is also the national frontier. He observes a surreal wedding in which the bride and her family stand on one shore and the groom and his relatives on the other, lost under a cold sky: figure in a landscape who only delude themselves that they are masters of the earth and their destiny The town, a remote ghost town, almost forgotten at the end of the world, has been named «waiting room» by the locals because most of its inhabitants are refugees from different countries many of whom have crossed the border illegally at some time or other and are now waiting for their turn to leave and start life anew «somewhere else.» In the course of his investigation he also comes upon an aging, reclusive refugee, who lives there cultivating a field. But the young journalist believes he is a famous Greek politician who disappeared years before, leaving behind him many unanswered questions. The man's identity is never resolved but the hapless refugees and divided village allow the reporter to understand his despair over the human condition.
Theo Angelopoulos weaves yet another poetical allegory on the great open questions of our turbulent age. The film is very contemporary in its treatment of borders, refugees and a changing world since the fall of communism in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union

«Being a refugee is an internal condition more than an external one, says one of the characters in the film. And later on he also says, «We've passed the borders but we're still here. How many frontiers do we have to pass to get home?» Do politicians really care? Does anyone? Finally, there is the image of the stranger standing on the bridge poised over the dividing line between the two countries. He has one leg suspended in mid air, like a stork. «If I take one more step I am... somewhere else, or... I die.»

A Soul in Suspended Animation, 14 January 2004
Author: david melville (dwingrove@qmuc.ac.uk) from Edinburgh, Scotland

Having only ever seen one Angelopoulos film before - The Travelling Players, which thrilled me about as much as paint drying on a wall - I was unprepared for the revelation that is The Suspended Step of the Stork. Shot over a decade ago, this long metaphysical tale of desperate refugees and disenchanted politicians has become more contemporary with each intervening year. As if a lone Greek film-maker had somehow prophesied the horrors of Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq - and the creeping paralysis that has overtaken Western democracy.

It begins in a refugee camp on the Greek-Albanian border, where a TV journalist spots an elderly man (Marcello Mastroianni) and decides he is a leading politician who went missing years before. Tracing the man's 'widow' (Jeanne Moreau) the reporter gropes his way towards the film's central dilemma. What could make a progressive intellectual lose all faith in humanity, to the extent that he gives up not only his political career but also his very identity?

This sounds like dry stuff indeed, and so it might be without the alchemical power of Angelopoulous's camera. There are sequences here that beg for inclusion in an anthology of all-time cinema greats. The tracking-shot along a disused train, each carriage inhabited by a penniless refugee family. The wedding across the river, with bride and groom stranded on opposite sides by the arbitrary idiocy of national borders, which veers perilously close to kitsch but never succumbs.

Moreau is magnificent, Mastroianni his genial hangdog self, but neither actor could ever mistake this film for a star vehicle. If there is a star here, it's the soul of humanity itself. A soul neither living nor dead, but held in suspended animation.

Theodoros Angelopoulos' Days of '36 (1972) DVD9 / PAL

Storyline (IMDb)

It is 1936 in Greece, shortly before the Metaxas' dictatorship. A former drug trafficker and police informer, Sofianos, is in prison because of the assassination of a trade unionist during a rally. A conservative politician, Kriezis, with whom Sofianos had a homosexual relationship, visits him in prison. Using a smuggled gun Sofianos manages to take him hostage in his cell and blackmails the police in order to be released. The government is at a dead end and the country finds itself in a crisis. If they free Kriezis, they will lose the support of the democrats, if they don't, they will lose the support of the conservatives. Being incapable of dealing with the situation, the government decide to kill Sofianos. First, they attempt clumsily to poison him and then they hire a sniper to shoot him. Written by Alkistis Zografou

Synopsis :

A trade unionist is assassinated at a workers' rally and a former police informer, Sofianos, is arrested and charged with the murder. The accused, a greatly troubled personage, currently out on probation, an ex drug-trafficker is being used to infiltrate and bring down his old accomplices. He is visited in prison by a Conservative Member of Parliament with whom he has a homosexual relationship. Using a smuggled gun, the prisoner takes the politician hostage creating an embarrassing and increasingly absurd scandal for the authorities. The government find themselves in a delicate predicament. If they do not free the hostage they will lose the support of the Conservatives and if they do the support of the democrats.. Forced to deal with a situation they cannot control and when «reason» and threats fail, they attempt to dispose of Sofianos, at first clumsily (a botched attempt to poison the prisoner), then, finally, with the devastating accuracy of a bullet as they send in a sharpshooter to finish the job. Order is finally restored but in the process two facts have emerged that reflect Angelopoulos' view of Greek history as portrayed in this film. Firstly that the government was so weak and corrupt that the actions of one person almost brought it down and secondly that it was so incompetent that it could solve a problem only through murder.

Director Roland Emmerich takes a break from his long string of big-budget disaster films with Anonymous, a historical drama that suggests Shakespeare was a fraud. Edward de Vere (Rhys Ifans) is an aristocrat who yearns to write poetry and plays, but due to social and political constraints, he is forced to use a front for his political-minded works because they subtly encourage Queen Elizabeth to alter her plan for succession in a way that is in direct opposition to her most-trusted political advisers. When drunken, illiterate, fame-hungry actor William Shakespeare (Rafe Spall) passes off the plays as his own, de Vere finds his man, but eventually he is blackmailed when the morally dubious thespian wants more and more. Anonymous screened at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.

The Prowler (1981) BD25 / 1080p AVC

Released during the heyday of the slasher genre — those formative years spanning 1980 and 1984 — 'The Prowler' is pure, unapologetic formula with absurdly graphic displays of shocking violence. In any other movie, this would be seen as a defect and a weakness within the script, but in the hands of Joseph Zito, who also went on to helm 'Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter' and 'Missing in Action,' what could have been standard horror fare is infused with a spooky atmosphere and a somewhat believable plot. Conventionality is put to great use in this seldom mentioned cult classic, which is often compared to the similarly themed 'My Bloody Valentine.' This underrated feature, however, is a skillful mix of suspense and brutally realistic special effects, which is also one of the movie's most notorious aspects thanks to the firs-rate wizardry of Tom Savini.

Regularly celebrated by fans as a textbook example of the subgenre, 'The Prowler' is near rhythmic in its movement from one plot device to the next. It starts with a flashback sequence just after World War II. A young G.I. has just been dumped the night of a graduation dance, leading to the murder of the girlfriend and her new beau. Thirty-five years later, the sleepy town of Avalon Bay decides to reopen its halls for another graduation ceremony. Sure enough, the killer returns, scarily dressed in full combat attire. This then commences the whodunit element of the narrative. But in this instance, the final reveal is pretty hilarious because we're never given any clues indicating the crazed maniac as the culprit. Then again, those last few seconds remain one of the most shocking things ever seen on screen. The other characters are obvious playbook archetypes, and the patsies are easy to distinguish from the survivors in the first few minutes of the second act.

Pam McDonald (Vicky Dawson) is the likeable good-girl of her class with chastity written all over her, and she has a crush on the town's deputy, Mark London (Christopher Goutman). Not surprisingly, her friends are a tad more disorderly and boisterous, and they verge heavily on the promiscuous side of life. To break free from some of the genre expectations, Zito adds great moments of tension where people seem genuinely cornered by the masked murderer. Rather than being caught in rooms where the lights inexplicably don't work, characters are caught off-guard in areas they'd normally feel safe. The mystery also provides reason for Pam and Mark to snoop around in places that clearly seem dangerous to viewers. Zito even adds a few nods to other horror favorites, most notably the shower scene from Hitchcock's 'Psycho'— the seminal slasher film.

'The Prowler' is widely considered by horror aficionados as one of the best demonstrations of its kind, from plot and characterization to production value and inventive kills. Part of what makes this movie so special is the incredibly convincing make-up effects from Tom Savini ('Friday the 13th,' 'Dawn of the Dead,' 'Creepshow'). Granted, other slasher flicks are arguably more violent, especially from a modern perspective, but none seem to provide this level of realism and shocking bluntness. Even though Savini would later work on the über grotesqueness of 'Day of the Dead' and 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2,' the award-winning artist still considers this his finest effort. Indeed, the three films commonly appreciated for their effective brutality ('The Prowler,' 'Maniac', and 'The Burning') were all done by the legendary master.

It's easy to see the movie doesn't attempt to redefine genre conventions or add something remotely ground-breaking. But the combination of Joseph Zito's direction and Tom Savini's special effects turns a run-of-the-mill plot into a slightly above-average 80s flick with an enjoyably suspenseful atmosphere. 'The Prowler' is a sadly underrated slasher feature that should not be missed by any self-respecting horror fanatic. This is arguably the height of the subgenre—at its sleaziest, formulaic, realistically graphic, but all-around fun for fans of the golden age of slasher films.

The Blu-ray: Vital Disc Stats

Blue Underground brings 'The Prowler' to Blu-ray in the standard blue keepcase with cover art that's reminiscent of the original poster. At startup, the BD25, Region Free disc goes straight to the standard menu options while full-motion clips play in the background.

The Video: Sizing Up the Picture

Previous versions of 'The Prowler' have ranged from awful to mediocre, which has more to do with the production's modest budget than with issues in the digital transfer. For this Blu-ray edition of the movie, Blue Underground's techs have done the best possible with a limited source. Meaning, this is the best home video presentation of Joseph Zito's slasher classic, despite it not looking much like the type of HD material we've come to expect from the format.

The cinematography comes with a unique hazy appearance that makes whites bloom often and noticeably mutes colors. Then again, reds and greens are fairly bright throughout. Although details are significantly affected by the stylized look, the image is as sharp as it could probably ever be, and there's not really anything to complain about. Overall, the 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode (1.85:1) displays wonderful clarity and resolution with a thin veneer of grain, providing the transfer with an appreciable filmic quality. Contrast and brightness levels are very well-balanced with resilient blacks, but shadow delineation is more on the average side of things. All things considered, the picture quality is far from demo-worthy, but the Blu-ray is a fantastic improvement from previous releases. This is the best 'The Prowler' has ever looked — and the best it will probably ever look.

The Audio: Rating the Sound

Blue Underground also throws in a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack that is every bit the equal of the video presentation. In other words, engineers have done the best possible with the available source, creating an enjoyable and engaging lossless mix. While rear activity is silent throughout the movie's runtime, the front soundstage is fairly welcoming and broad, especially when the musical score comes into play. It may not be as impressive as other catalog releases, but it gives 'The Prowler' a good acoustical presence with well-prioritized vocals. Dynamic range is also noticeably limited and a bit flat but cleanly delivered nonetheless. Low-frequency effects are expectedly lackluster. In the end, the movie puts on a pretty good show, despite some obvious limitations.

The Supplements: Digging Into the Good Stuff

For this Blu-ray edition of the slasher classic, Blue Underground ports over the same set of bonus features seen on previous DVD releases. The only thing missing is a short still gallery.

Audio Commentary — Special effects artist Tom Savini joins director Joseph Zito for this terrific and superb conversation about the movie. Their back and forth is affable and quite entertaining, but both men relate a great deal of information surrounding the production — mostly Zito remembering things as they actually happened. The discussion also moves on beyond the technical and into some hilarious stories about the cast and crew. This really is a great audio track for diehard fans of the movie.
Tom Savini's Behind-the-Scenes Gore Footage (SD, 10 min) — Pretty much as the title sounds, this is raw video footage taken while on the set. Fans of Tom Savini's work and special make-up effects in general will love watching the master at work.
Trailer (SD) — Rounding out the package is the original theatrical preview for 'The Prowler.'

HD Bonus Content: Any Exclusive Goodies in There?

There are no high-def exclusives.

Easter Eggs

No easter eggs reported for 'The Prowler' yet.

Final Thoughts

Full of graphic violence and a good dose of tension, 'The Prowler' is one of the finest examples of slasher films. Released at the height of the subgenre's popularity, the film is pure formula done effectively by Joseph Zito's well-paced direction and Tom Savini's masterful make-up work. This Blu-ray edition of the movie arrives with good but dated picture quality and an average audio presentation. Although the assortment of supplements is small, the overall package is still attractive for fans, and a sure buy. For neophytes, this sadly underrated cult classic deserves at least a rental, if not a purchase.

OVERALL: R2

The Arrow Films 'Immortal Edition' is the clear winner, with a choice of aspect ratios and both edits of the film, along with a range of contextual material.

There has been a lot of debate of the OAR of this film, and that Romero prefers the 4:3, since the film was shot in 16 mm. In the new R1 audio commentary, Romero points out some scenes where the matting hurts the image (this was still probably shown 1.66:1 or 1.85:1 in the theatres).

SYNOPSIS:This movie is based on a novel of Tiziano Sclavi, and it always reflects the "sclavian philosophy" diffused by the most succesful comics in Italy: Dylan Dog, the detective of the nightmare. There is the duality between love and dead (in Italian "dellamore" means "of love" and "dellamorte" means "of death"), a duality that Dellamorte feels in a really hard way. He is the guardian of the cemetery of Buffalora, a little town in the north of Italy, in which, we don't know why, corpses rise from tombs and Dellamorte has to destroy them. Dellamorte seems not to ask to himself why this happen?

Hal Hartley's Amateur (1994) DVD5 / NTSC

Amazon.com
Filmmaker Hal Hartley is something of an acquired taste. But if you can get on his oddball, deadpan wavelength, you can't help but enjoy his films--and this is one of his best. Isabelle Huppert plays a former nun who now works as a pornographer. She connects with Martin Donovan, playing a fellow who's lost his memory, but whose past may contain particularly nasty stuff. As they look for a way to get away from that past (which includes a couple of hit men who look like stockbrokers), the two discuss the meaning of their lives in hilariously vague ways. Hartley's dialogue is tart and concise, filled with acidic but low-key humor. And Donovan, who also starred in the director's equally good Trust, has just the right downbeat affect to give the film an unusual spin. --Marshall Fine

From The New Yorker
In Hal Hartley's fourth feature, a lively and very peculiar sort of thriller, an amnesiac (Martin Donovan), an ex-nun (Isabelle Huppert), a porn star (Elina Lowensohn), and an accountant (Damian Young) are on the lam from a sinister European arms merchant. As usual in this director's movies, all the characters turn out to be running from themselves-from identities that have let them down. Hartley's Godardian manner is occasionally irritating, but Huppert's delicate, surprisingly witty performance keeps the picture grounded in recognizable human emotions. The movie is best seen as a comedy about the virtues of amnesia: in Hartley's world, waking up not knowing who you are is a blessing-even a miracle. -Terrence Rafferty

Product Description
A crackpot ex-nun who writes pornographic short stories crosses paths with an amnesiac wandering the streets of New York City. When they set out to uncover his identity, they come face to face with his unsavory past – including a vengeful porno actress and ruthless corporate assassins hot on their trail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gets better with repeated viewings, December 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Amateur [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Like all Hal Hartley films (I've seen Flirt and Henry Fool, but neither are as good as Amateur), this is a decidedly odd and mannered movie. The first time I saw it, the far-fetched plot and stilted characterizations are a bit unnerving. This is an ambitious project--Hartley explores the fall of man (an event which literally precedes the film) and original sin in the context of an off-kilter Manhattan thriller. There are some hilariously delivered deadpan one-liners (Martin Donovan: "You're a nyphmomanic and you've never had sex? How could that be?" Isabelle Huppert: "I'm choosy.") But the heart of the movie revolves around the title, and how, try as we might, we cannot escape who we are--Hartley seems to suggest that humanity's flaws are indelible, and despite the guises we might adopt, we are only novices. Amateur ranks low on entertainment value (see Air Force One instead), but a great thinking person's film: brainy, sly, somber, and at times (especially the ending), heartbreaking. Hartley's beguiling screenplay unravels its original insights upon repeated viewings, and it makes the effort worthwhile.

This is just an attempt to cash in on the EMMANUELLE series (shocking from Franco, I know!) but this was made before the first EMMANUELLE film in 1974. One has to assume that it is a title slapped on at a later date because the lead female is actually named Barbara. The odd thing is that in the dubbing she is referred to as Emanuelle and Barbara at different points. Confused? Good because it is only gonna get more convoluted. Okay, so Emanuelle's husband Gordon invites his shrink Michel (Jack Taylor) to come to the house for the weekend to help Emanuelle (Norma Castell), who is slowly breaking down. The day after he arrives, Emanuelle is found dead at the bottom of a cliff. The cops begin investigating her apparent suicide with Michel as the main suspect and many twists, turns and lovers are revealed. This is a pretty entertaining timekiller. The mystery is actually pretty well done and culminates with a bizarre twist. Franco fills the running time with lots of softcore sex scenes involving nearly the entire cast (including the cute Lina Romay). "
nude girls is the only honour

I want to warn the people who by any means happened to face this movie.

I really regret that I watched it and I will have to get rid of many not-very-pleasant-at-all pictures which got stuck in my mind. I don't understand this urge to show corpses in such details. Maybe that happens because authors didn't have any other tool to influence the level of watcher's adrenalin, but to me it brought only incredible disgusting feeling and I went out from cinema with the clear desire to clean my mind from this watching. And that's not only because of the corpses. I hate speculations on the theme of religion and culture, but when a Russian director does it and in such a shallow way – it's just unbearable. I honestly was trying to find any idea in the story, but unfortunately – didn't manage. Yes, I want to take the responsibility to say that there is no idea there, no philosophy, only the realistic pictures of unrestrained sins and killing.

My vote is not "1" (awful) just because of the beautiful girls running all over the screen. Kinda good advertising for Russian brides.

But I can't recommend this movie to anyone anyway. It poisons the mind. It is consciousness-murderous.

fantasy thriller about no one being right but self-righteous, nice nature+nudes

*** This review may contain spoilers ***

Never heard of that movie before, but judging from the cover it seemed quite interesting, even though it just cost me 2,99 € (the same price I paid for "Prom Night III", which is considered the worst movie ever to be watched in our dormitory...)

A story about a Russian 11th century village, almost torn apart by the struggle between traditional "heathen" cultists and the newly introduced church. After a kind of midsummernight-orgy the dismembered corpse of a village girl is found, nude and raped. The villages' chief claims the deed to be done by a werewolf, the priest declares it a result of heathen practices. Half the village joins a wolf-hunt while the pater organizes a witch-hunt. Only the healer of the village, more an artisan than just a "wise woman" senses the truth which much closer to reality than myth or religion and she therefore ends up as the scapegoat both parties are willing to sacrifice...

A nice picture I really enjoyed watching, despite the slow action and the more than obvious plot (completely summarized on the DVD-cover), lacking any unexpected turnouts. Both, my sister and my roommate were pretty bored. I really love how the narration neither takes sides with church nor heathens. The allurement of that movie also lies in its pictures that seem more "natural" than those of any Hollywood-movie. It's starring "real" people, displays a real landscape and uses real dirt instead of paper-mâché-sets and plastic-actors with plastic boobs. Oh, btw, there's a high degree of nudity in that movie... quite aesthetic. All in all a good buy...
